What does a package manager do, anyway?

The F@t Guy's Package Manager

A Little Update:
(Get excited... if the page is up, it's on it's way)

Well, It isn't back yet
, but with TFGThing in beta, the very next most important utility to get back up and running is TFGPkg. With the package manager back up, any troubles can be easily fixed and distributed. It is nearly the only thing left that is stopping me from getting TFGTools, TFGWin7 and TFGCmd7 back up here for distribution. TFGBoot will be a while yet, as more of it will rely upon hard core single purpose executables, and both it and OSSys rely upon stable versions of TFGCmd7 first, and TFGWin as well. And all of that relies upon TFGPkg for downloads and updates to a repository location.

So TFGPkg is next on the list to develop.

And it will work just about like the old one, using a folder to house individual engine files - While I like Ketarin, which I am using in the interim, I find it much harder to deal with. The database is harder to access and change, and cannot be updated (the database I mean) remotely as easily as pulling down new .eng files from an online stash.

So expect the same under-the-hood approach, with a LST file for the program, another for the TFGPkg updates and definitions to download. SOSDD. And a particular reminder was given to me by a former user of TFGPkg (yes you, Pete) to be sure I keep my standard of "REMming" lines with a beginning asterisk char - not to worry, as that will happen for sure.

It will still be a wget driven application too, with the same syntax for scraping as before, though LMOD by Schaeffer won't be being used (I think it is dead). I am writing a cover of LMOD to stand in the breach, with the intention of incorporating the cmdline version right into TFGPkg. Likewise, my old LSTFile console app is being rewritten for handling the lists and that too will be incorporated (both into TFGThing, which will be the front end of TFGPkg).

But the new version, while still being a cmdline app, will allow hiding of the console it spawns, and will have a happy windows dialog style information box with a nice zippy bar, and all the works. A /config dialog with checkboxes, input lines and whatnot will make it easier to configure too.

So there you have it. Coming soon (this year, anyway). Stay tuned.
