Back... Home.. Forward... Bugkit News

I want to stop a minute and thank y'all for your support on BUGKIT. We've rec'd alot of encouraging e-mail and that is why we're going forward on this.

It is gonna be fun to watch you guys fall over for UPAPPS (see below) as a standalone too. It has sure made my life easier... I have it set up so that it dumps all the defs right into my CDMaster, so any time I cut a new TFGUTIL, it contains brandy-spankin defs for all the major food groups... I am sure you will like it.  -TFG

09.08.06- Ok, so the announcement of UPDEFS was premature... It is now called UPAPPS and is a combination of UPDEFS and the formerly mentioned UPPROGS...  It's pretty all-purpose now, with inbuilt date features allowing individual programs to be skipped for XX days... It really is pretty cool... still able to run a list too... best of all, before release, the same ID method will allow  saving each program to whatever directory you like- within the confines of the DLDBASE variable- and the CDMASTER variable will be handled the same way... So stay tuned!

09.08.06-  Avert and Avast cleaners will be omited from bugkit for sure now.  Having alot of good luck with the DRWEB Cureit utility I am not certain whether we'll be supporting Cureit or the DRWeb CmdLine, but one or the other. Another new addition, I'm pretty impressed with Sophos as well. Having some bad luck trying to get McAfee legally, but working on it. As of right now, Bugkit will be supporting:

F-Protect (FPCMD.EXE if you have it.)
Trend Sysclean
Mcafee CmdLine
Sophos CmdLine
DrWeb CmdLine or Cureit
A2 Trojan CmdLine
KavDOS (perhaps with MWav component retained, though most don't like it because it doesn't clean).

Possibly NOD32 DOS
Possibly BITDefender
Possibly Clamwin

In addition, the UpApps module (which can be used stand-alone) will retain it's abilities within Bugkit- So any of the other things Upapps can do can still be done- Downloading and updating Spybot S&D (defs and app), Adaware (defs and app), HijackThis, among many, many others.

08.14.06- Announcing Version 1b of UPDEFS (Soon to be linked from BUGKIT and from TFGCentral)... It's here and working in both NT and 9x! Just a little more wait, till my millions of beta-testers give me a green light... I am paying them twice what I usually do (nothing), and working them overtime (double-nothing, damn union)!

This is a way mo'bedda aproach than I had going on in the first BUGKIT- No more Installer Builds! LOLOL! Yep, no more building at all! You see, it struck me as I was messin' with this, that if UPDEFS (as a mod in BK or as Stand-alone) is pushing the defs out to a folder in your CDMaster folder, that the DEFS WILL CERTAINLY BE ONBOARD YOUR CD... So whadderya need to pack them in the build for? If the next component, UPPROGS (the program updater) does that too, then the bone-stock BUGKIT is all you need to install to the client box- On installation you will just need to "update from folder" rather than "update from internet" (which can be automated in the installation process)... then a relatively simple "find the CD" game, and it all just falls right in... of course, if your CD is a little old, you could then update from internet as you normally would...

So the new BUGKIT is looking like three scripts now- Two different updaters, and the main program.

Oh, and I should mention, UPDEFS is already capable of another neat trick- DldDefBase is the var that defines the root folder where UPDEFS will download to. It can be changed in the inifile to anywhere you like! the stock version sets it to "local" which builds a DOWNLOADS folder in UPDEFS's root directory, but you can tell it to go somewhere else. So you could turn off the CDMaster and Download directly to it! Or, if you are like me, I down everything to TFGTOOLS directory, and use my TFG CDBuilders to build a new master from TFGTOOLS each time. so the DEFS folder from UPDEFS resides there... you see?

Another little util is coming out of this build, too: DrWeb updates come down in little tiny zip packages... bazillions of them; but the program looks for the files within the zips- so ZIPBANG is a little wrapper for 7za (in Win, w/ PK2.50 in DOS) which just needs to know the directory where the bazillion live, and where you want them to wind up, and it builds a listfile and feeds it to the zip util... ZIP! BANG! POW! Look ma, no eyebrows! all them little zippers are unpacked as nice as you please... Oof! I need some sleep. That "no eyebrows" thing was too wierd, even for me... seeya soon!

08.12.06 - Announcing Version 1 of Bugkit... I am in the middle of a ground-up rebuild, so the beta version is soon to go away, replaced by version 1b. One of the major improvements is to the UPAVS component-

UPAVS is now called UPDEFS, it is self-contained and stand-alone... still a module for BUGKIT, but now UPDEFS can also be used separately. It doesn't handle "program updates", It's only job is AV Defs. It's built in a modular fashion too, so I can add more "engines" to it so that it can support more products. Current update engines for UPDEFS include: F-Prot, KAV, McAfee, Trend, DrWeb, TrojanHunter, Spybot S&D, and Adaware. The program will also update it's .ENG files from here, so if a new engine is written, or a particular engine needs a change, I can fix it and distribute it through UPDEFS update feature.

The "Program Updater" will be a clone of UPDEFS (to a degree), and will be able to be used stand-alone as well.. this in turn will become the heart of the updater for TFGTOOLS (TFG CommonTools),  and the new UserTools (CDBuilder for user level GPL/freeware programs). The main difference built into the program updater will be an option to update by DATE... so the program can be set NOT to check for updates for XX days, that way the programs don't have to be downloaded every time, but programs with an expiration key can be renewed when needed. Still working on that one...

As far as BUGKIT goes: I am removing support for AVERT and AVAST- most of you feel they are a waste of time, and I tend to agree. The bigger cleanup engines seem to be much better anyway. We're also adding support for DrWeb's Cureit cleanup engine, which I have been having good luck with, and we are contemplating others... Alot of you have been asking for Panda and Nod32 support, so I am working on those too...

The Install builder in Bugkit is going to get alot less complicated, and the entire package is going to be less complicated in general- more folders and less compressed into the LIB file. in fact, the lib file can be shut off completely now- as long as you have the dependencies it contains in the path it will work fine.

The component pieces are working great in 9x, so we are on our way... Gotta hang an NT box in here somewhere so I can write the NT version. Haven't really had NT5 around since converting to Ubuntu :P
